Lack of learning is demotivating

This is especially important in the knowledge industry, where the learning never really stops. Technologies change every few years and newer variations and enhancements show up almost every month.

Most teams tend to specialize in one kind of work, and that makes perfect sense for the organization as the quality and consistency of delivery gets better as people spend more time with the same kind of work.

However, the side effect of too much focus on one technology and one kind of work is that the learning curve becomes rather flat. It's more of the same every day, and every new project is only a small twist on the earlier one.

Individuals start seeing their technical growth as stagnant. Even when they want to spend some time on a new technology, there is very little time to go beyond tutorial-level knowledge. For some time, the non-technical growth, that is, growth in responsibilities or compensation, and so on, may keep a person motivated, but over time a technologist will get demotivated if learning slows down.

Managers and organizations need to invest in training infrastructure and make skills upgrade a part of the culture. Work rotation is another great way to create new learning opportunities. For example, a person working on pl.sql reports in project A can possibly work on high-volume data capture jobs or even a very different technology like Java.
