No social status is demotivating

There are a number of people in the team, and some have the status of a technical guru, some are very personable and hence have the status of a social leader, and many others are just worker bees.

In the knowledge industry, nobody wants to be a worker bee for too long. Everyone wants to be something that makes him/her distinct among his/her peers.

Managers can help facilitate these soft positions within the group. Everybody can't be a leader of the team, but they can be leaders in their own domain. Managers can create opportunities for people to display their expertise, such as seminars and training that the area-expert can deliver. Managers can acknowledge their expertise in various meetings and forums and involve them in discussions and decisions about their area.
